Physics 121

The physics 121 challenge exam is available in the testing center before the add/drop deadline — the first week of each semester. It is a 30-question multiple-choice test that covers the following:

  • Unit conversion
  • Vectors
  • Newton's laws
  • Kinematic equations
  • Kinetic friction
  • Circular motion
  • Centripetal acceleration
  • Angular kinematics
  • Linear momentum
  • Elastic and inelastic collisions
  • Kinetic and potential energy
  • Work
  • Torque
  • Angular momentum
  • Newton's second law for rotation
  • Static equilibrium
  • Oscillatory motion
  • Gravitational force law

It is a closed-book and closed-notes exam. You can use your own calculator, but only the very basic functions: +, −, ×, ÷ powers, exponents, logarithms, sine, cosine, tangent, and the inverses of these functions. Desmos, Mathematica, and scripting language programs, for example, are not allowed, and neither are the plotting or equation solving capabilities of your calculator. A student may attempt the challenge exam only once.
